AVEDA
In 1978, Horst Rechelbacher began a plant-based line of beauty products called Aveda. In 1982 he opened the Aveda Institute in downtown Minneapolis and each year hundreds of beauty students learn the Aveda techniques, as well as the importance of leadership, innovation and social responsibility.

Minneapolis-based Dayton’s department stores, founded in 1902 by the great grandfather of Governor Mark Dayton, may have closed (the company was rebranded as Marshall Field’s in 2001 and purchased by Macy’s in 2006), but the company’s legacy lives on in Target Corporation. The discount store company, founded in 1962, first opened in the northeast suburb of Roseville. Today, Target operates more than 1,750 stores in 49 states, ranging from traditional stores to SuperTarget stores.
